Lawn Installations

A Green Lawn is “Affordable Curb Appeal”

NH Lawn InstallationsIt’s an undisputed fact among Realtors that the single best thing you can do to improve curb appeal and help sell your home is to have a lush green lawn. As far as landscaping goes, it’s also one of the most affordable. At Dube’s Landscaping, we work with many Realtors across southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts performing lawn installations. Whether you are selling your home or not, a new lawn is a great investment if it is done correctly.

A good foundation. Much of the new construction in southern Hampshire over the past 30 years is built on developments in which the topsoil has been harvested and resold, leaving only a 2 inch covering over sandy fill. If your lawn burns out in the summer, or if your irrigation system is using a lot of water to keep your lawn green, this may be the cause. When Dube’s Landscaping installs a new lawn, we use a full 3 to 4 inches of topsoil that we custom blend at our landscape materials center in Hudson New Hampshire. A good foundation of nutrient-rich topsoil is critical to the success of a new lawn installation.

Hydroseed or sod? Besides the cost difference of hydroseeding versus sodding, there are some other factors to consider when deciding which is best for your lawn installation.

Sun exposure. If your yard is shady, it would be best to go with hydroseeding. A sod lawn requires at least four hours of direct sun to thrive; full sun all day is optimal for sod. Hydroseed can be blended for full sun, part sun, or fully shady areas.

Foot traffic. If you are expecting immediate traffic after your new lawn is installed, consider sod as an “instant lawn” that can be walked on immediately.

And water. Either hydroseed or sod can be done at anytime of the year, provided it gets enough water- which is the third ingredient for a successful lawn installation.

Irrigation is a must. Although New Hampshire is considered a cooler climate, our summers can be hot and dry. Providing the right amount of water daily throughout the first year of your new lawn can mean the difference between success and failure. At Dube’s Landscaping, we are always extolling the virtues of having an automated irrigation system. Not because we love to install and maintain irrigation systems, but because they keep your yard clean and green without you having to water. It’s just a fact that busy people with active lives simply don’t have time to consistently water their lawn. A new lawn, whether seed or sod, is vulnerable to drought stress. Your best chance to have the best lawn is the first time we install it.
